The co-founder Dr Richard Bandler and John Grinder believed that NLP would be useful in “finding ways to help people have better, fuller and richer lives”.
They coined the term “Neuro-Linguistic Programming” to emphasize their belief in a connection between the neurological processes (“neuro”), language (“linguistic”) and behavioral patterns that have been learned through experience (“programming”) and can be organized to achieve specific goals in life.
Dr Richard Bandler, co-developer “Neuro-Linguistic Programming” when asked to write the definition of Neuro-Linguistic Programming that appears in the Oxford English Dictionary. It is as follow:
Neuro-Linguistic Programming: “a model of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behaviour and the subjective experiences (esp. patterns of thought) underlying them” and “a system of alternative therapy based on this which seeks to educate people in self-awareness and effective communication, and to change their patterns of mental and emotional behaviour.
In a simple sense:
Neuro-Linguistic Programming or NLP is a technology of communication and a behavioural model that studies the patterns (programming) of excellence, i.e how excellent individuals subjectively think (use brain and senses =neuro), communicate verbally and non-verbally (linguistic) and move to achieve desired results.
Neuro-Linguistic Programming provides all of us with the tools and strategies to understand and model these patterns of success in self and others. NLP also gives us tools to discover and change un-useful behaviors that sabotage our goals. NLP techniques are widely used in the fields of leadership, education, Coaching, counseling, business, personal development and more.
How has NLP originated?
Initially NLPhas originated from the work of two persons, Richard Bandler and John Grinder at the University of California at Santa Cruz since 1970’s. Richard Bandler’s background was in mathematics and gestalt while John Grinder was well versed in linguistics. They sought to formulate an easy to adopt and methodological system of change, therapy and counseling, with explicit skills and techniques, by observing the patterns of excellence. They worked and study the models then practiced by Fritz Perls (creator of Gestalt ), Virginia Satir (renowned family therapist) and Milton Erickson (founder of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis). They then formulated their modeling techniques under the name NLP. This was later used to model experts from diverse fields of professional communication, sports, business, hypnosis, psychotherapy, and education. This has of late become model of change, transformation and leadership.
How does NLP work?
NLP’s basic premise is that the human brain functions in a very organized and systematic manner similar to a computer, which executes ‘programs’ or mental strategies in ordered sequences of instructions (or set of internal representations). NLP specifically and objectively measures and identifies the physiological state and mental strategies people use at any point in time, and provides specific means to change and improve the mental and physiological state of the person.
Present State + Appropriate Resources leads to Desired State
